Silk fabric and a balance illustrating fabric weight

Momme, often written as mm, is a traditional unit used to describe the weight of silk fabric. It helps compare fabric substance, but it is not a complete grade of fiber, workmanship, or finished quality.

What momme measures

The traditional definition relates the weight of a specified length and width of fabric. In practical terms, it works as an expression of silk fabric weight per area: a higher number generally means more material in the same area.

Why a higher number is not automatically better

Performance also depends on fiber consistency, weave, dyeing and finishing, sewing, and care. A lighter silk may offer a fluid drape, while a heavier silk may feel more substantial. Neither is universally best; each can suit a different purpose.

Think about the product

Pillowcases and eye masks balance touch, coverage, durability, and care. Underwear and loungewear must also account for movement, fit, season, and breathability. Compare momme together with fiber content, weave, dimensions, construction, and intended use.

A practical buying check

Look for a clearly stated momme, fiber content, finished size, and care instructions. Be cautious when one number is emphasized without supporting information. Momme is useful, but it is only one part of an informed silk purchase.
