Silk Momme Guide

What Is Momme?

Momme, often abbreviated as mm, is a traditional unit used to describe the weight of silk fabric over a defined area. Under comparable fibre and weaving conditions, a higher momme weight generally means a denser, more substantial fabric—but momme alone does not determine quality.

Understanding Different Momme Weights

Different products call for different levels of lightness, drape and structure, so there is no single momme weight that is best for every use.

  • Lighter silk: Often airy and fluid, making it suitable for designs that prioritise lightness and movement.
  • Mid-weight silk: Can balance softness, drape and everyday practicality, and is commonly found in pillowcases, sleep accessories and some garments.
  • Higher momme silk: Often feels fuller and more substantial, although weave, layers and finishing still shape the final experience.

Why Momme Is Not the Whole Story

Fibre composition, weave, single- or double-layer construction, sewing, dimensions and care all affect how a finished product performs. Labelling practices may also vary between sources, so momme should be read as part of the complete product information.

What to Check Before Choosing

  1. Confirm the fibre composition rather than relying on words such as “satin” or “silky”.
  2. Check whether the stated momme weight applies to the exact style or SKU.
  3. Distinguish between single-layer, double-layer and partially layered construction.
  4. Consider use, season, preferred feel and care routine together.

Elmoah states momme weight when it can be verified. If styles within one product differ, refer to the relevant SKU and product description.
